(Note from Don Sarten: Dows fugitive emissions whilst making Agent Orange/ 245T is only implicated as the source of Johnathans carcinogen, as no one else in New Plymouth emitted anything dangerous, Power Plant is burning LPG, Dow is process of elimination, outside cigarettes, peanut butter, teflon fry pan, blah blah, you get the picture. There is a "Clutster" of several diseases in New Plymouth all unique to the poison industry.)

Subject: IWD
Dear Donald Sarten,
We often receive copies of your emails to Quaid Hutchinson and I want firstly to applaud you in your brave stance. I grew up in New Plymouth and was there when the nightmare of IWD first came. As is usual in NZ, all the local burghers thought it was progress. My parents, who were very worried by it, did not do anything publicly, probably because there was no point in even trying in the climate at that time. The Values Party was the first organization to take the issue on board but after they fizzled, it all died again and IWD went on their merry way.I attended Spotswood College from 1964 to 1968. During that time, there was often a strong chemical smell in the air from the factory. The company assured the masses that it was a harmless by-product!
In 1989, my youngest child died a terrible death from neuroblastoma, the same cancer as Liam Williams-Holloway had. He was 2 years and 4 months old. The difficulty with cancer is that it is not possible to pinpoint causative factors with certainty but there is certainly a big question mark in my mind with this one. A U.S. study on a cluster of this type of cancer found that a common factor was exposure to the insecticide Chlordane. I think it would be most interesting to see the results of comprehensive, independent epidemiological studies of the incidence of cancer in those living, working or attending schools in the areas most affected. Unlikely I suppose, given what might emerge and given the track record of the medical fraternity in investigating cancer incidence - we were never questioned by anyone before or after the death of our son.
Keep up the good work - we would appreciate being on your email list if that is possible.
